Chapter Ten

The date had gone well enough so far, almost too well in his mind. Marie was so easy to talk to, and she had a lot of positive energy that was infectious. She was also good at intelligent conversation, she didn’t just babble endlessly about nothing or anything like that. He no longer had a doubt she was into him, and he was halfway there as far as tossing out the whole age thing and going with the rest.

It was easy to see why he’d go for her, but he wasn’t quite sure what she saw in him that had her so… into him.

It was his first date, but between his research and her infectious warmth it seemed to be going really well, almost effortless. They’d had steak that night, with a shrimp appetizer they’d shared. She was both clearly surprised and thrilled by the level of effort he was putting in, at least that was the impression he had, she didn’t come out and just say it of course. That would’ve been far too direct.

It was the second part of their date he wasn’t sure about. The weather was still warm enough late evening for a walk, it was still late August after all, but it was a tad humid and the hoped for night sky with stars was absent, because it was overcast. He even feared it might start raining.

“Maybe we should go straight to dessert? It might rain?” he mentioned, as they started out of the restaurant and toward the park.

She shook her head, “I think it will hold off, and a little exercise will head off the food coma and work off some of those calories.”

She’d sounded pretty sure the rain would hold off, and he wasn’t going to argue. The walk after all was the romantic part of the date, when they weren’t surrounded by all the other diners. At least, that’s what it was in his head.

He chuckled, “I’m game if you are.”

She nodded, and they headed down and into the small park. The walking path circled it, so he wasn’t too worried about running into troublemakers, and thought she’d be more comfortable, both removed from yet close to the city streets filled with people and cars.

Not that he was scared of troublemakers, he’d deal with it easily if it happened and protect Marie, but it would also deflate the current high they both had, and the intimacy, which he really didn’t want to happen.

He was pleased and sure he hadn’t overstepped, when he took her hand and she grasped his back so tightly and graced him with a warm smile. There was thrill in the small act of intimacy he hadn’t experienced before, but he tried not to show just how devastating she was to him, on almost every level.

The long moment of silence was comfortable and intimate, not awkward at all. Almost as if they were both savoring the moment of the first time that they held hands.

Then it started to pour.
